We're a big fan of setting new goals (both professional and personal) and coming up with creative ways to achieve them. Here are our three tips for planning and achieving your goals:
Knowing yourself is crucial for establishing a new habit. Only you know how you perform best and your true motivations for wanting change.
Do you find that others help to keep you accountable or are you able to follow your own plan pretty reliably?
Identifying why are you making this change is also crucial as it will keep the goal personal and meaningful to you over the long run.
Take a look at Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle concept which demonstrates how to make decisions based on your guiding purpose (your why). The examples are more business-oriented but the concepts resonate for personal goal setting too.
Make A Plan

We’ve all hear this quote before. Truth is, all of us need a clear and detailed path to follow when embarking on a change. Our brain will get scared by any element of vagueness (as it considers it an unknown) and it will run back to it’s familiar routine.
In the book Switch, authors Chip and Dan Heath consider a clear path as one of the three components needed to create change in your life. The other two are the rider (the intellect) and the emotional motivation which they refer to as the elephant. Both of these elements need to be in unity and headed down the clear path together or they will constantly be fighting against each other.
It’s important to reward yourself whenever you make progress towards your goal.
After that workout or yoga class - give yourself a reward.
The reward's specifics are up to you but the important part is training yourself to consider this new behavior as good and that you will be rewarded each time you do it. Overtime you will train yourself to practice the behavior without the reward but rewarding yourself initially is a crucial step to establish positive feelings towards the new change you’re implementing.
